i think you can greyhound it up there or grab some cheap flights through virgin, when they have their happy hour. Best bet would be to check out the YHA website....i think its www.yha.com.au
virgin blue happy hour is at 12pm every day from what i remember, they have flight that can get you to rockhampton and up townsville way too.

Tue, February 5, 2008 - 4:16 PMWe flew into Sydney, took a buss to Beautiful Byron...a month later, decided it was time to see the huge, Surfable Country. So we bought a car- A sweet ford falcon...stationwagen all the way.

If you've got the bucks, time, and PADI certification, do a scuba live-aboard trip to the outter reef and maybe a wreck or two. Weekend town markets. Eungella, if you can make it up there to see the platypi and the old hotel there with the amazing view...for maybe a little hang-gliding off the pool patio? -
